Installing weighttp on AWS/EC2: ev library not found

when installing weighttp on AWS EC2 using the Amazon Linux AMI you might get errors such as:
  • "ev library not found." when running ./waf configure or
  • libev.so.4 not being found
This series of steps fixed it for me:
